Covers the area from 28 degrees to 48 degrees North Latitude and from 62 to 98 degrees East Longitude or roughly from Rajputana and Bhutan on the south to Russian Turkestan and Mongolia on the north. Drawn by C. Barich, E. Debes and H. Habenich in 1890. Map sheet in paper-backed clear plastic sleeve, very light edgewear, crease in middle, otherwise very good.

JOHNSON AND WARD  Map: Johnson's, Hindostan or British India
New York, Johnson & Ward. ca 1864?. Scale of statue miles: 69.16 to 1 degree. 13 3/4" x 17 7/8 ". Light browning toward edges, 2 corners slightly chipped, few very small closed edge tears, otherwise very good. Page 90 from an unidentified atlas. Hand colored with ca 2" x 4 1/2" handsome engraved cartouche of Government House & Treasury, Calcutta in upper left hand corner and 3 inset maps of Bombay, Calcutta and Madras, each about 2 1/2 by 4 inches. Alvin Jewett Johnson (1827-1884) was one of the leading American cartographic publishers in the second half of the 19th century. He moved to New York from Richmond about 1860 and teamed up with Ward, a partnership which last until about 1866. He published a number of atlases from one of which this would appear to have been taken. A handsome item for framing.
