GOMPERTZ, M.L.A. (AKA "GANPAT")  The Road to Lamaland: Impressions of a Journey to Western Tibet by "Ganpat"
New York, George H. Doran. First American edition. n.d. [1926]. x, 246pp, 27 photo illustrations. 8vo/23cm. Blind stamp decorated maroon cloth gilt, rubbed at extremities, small chip head of back joint, nick on bottom of back board, internally fine. Martin Louis Alan Gompertz (1886- ), a British Indian Army officer, was called "Ganpat" (the name of an elephant-headed Indian deity) by his men as the closest they could get to pronouncing his name. He was an observant writer and wrote a number of Himalayan-oriented travel books, some humorous. Ladakh was also called "Lesser Tibet" and occasionally, with the adjacent Tibetan- speaking area of Baltistan to the north, "Little Tibet". The publication date of this work is sometimes given as 1916, e.g. Yakushi G78, but the preponderant library cataloguing (i.e. British Library, LC and NYPL) is 1926. He wrote another book about "the topsy-turvy land" of Ladakh in 1928. See also Warikoo 358.
