| HUSSAIN, SYED TAFFAZULL Sheikh Abdullah: A Biography (based on Sheikh Abdullah's Memoir, "Atish-e-Chinar" (Urdu) by M.Y. Taing. Volume I (1905-1934) Indianapolis, IN, Wordclay. 2008. First Edition. xv, 105pp, 8vo/23cm. Illustrated card-stock wrappers. NF. This is a bit of a puzzler. Nothing is known about the author who appears to be a U.S. resident and has published the book using Wordclay, a vanity press. The Urdu version of Sheikh Abdullah's supposed "memoir" is not in the Library of Congress and appears to be unavailable on the usual large bookdealer sites. The author is very critical of it. e.g. "written in a flowery style", "there are grievous errors in the chronology..", and has apparently extensively changed it using other works which he cites in his Preface and "Bibilography"; also mentioning that much of it is similar to the Wikipedia article on Sheikh Abdullah which, "has a large contribution from my efforts." M.Y. Taing (1934- ) appears to be a widely published and respected writer of Kashmir but in an unsourced and effusively laudatory article about him on Wikipedia, it does not mention Atish-i-Chinar among his various publications. Until more can be determined about Syed Taffazzull Hussain, the author, this memoir should be viewed with some skepticism. Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah (1905 -1982), also known as Sher-i-Kashmir (lion of Kashmir) was probably the most important political figure in the modern history of Jammu and Kashmir. He was head of the state's largest party, the National Conference, and served both as Prime Minister and Chief Minister of the state. Two of his sons, Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah have followed in his footsteps as Chief Minister of the state, the latter presently beomg the incumbent.
