Derbyshire describes this work as, "A vigorous Marxist class analysis of Islamic religious movements and trends..from the last third of the 19th century until the 1940s." Wilfred Cantwell Smith (1916-2000) was one of the foremost 20th century authorities in the field of comparative religion. He founded the Institute of Islamic Culture at McGill University in the fifties and later head of the Institute of World Religion at Harvard. At the time of writing, he was Lecturer in Islamic History at Forman Christian College in Lahore and an Associate at the Henry Martyn School of Islamic Studies, Aligarh University.
