The Wards spent twenty five years as missionaries in India and this is their memoir or recollections of the experience. Bharatkhand stands for 'the land of Bharat' or India. "Bharat" is the ancient Hindi name for India, "Bharata" being a legendary god.

Denison Ross ( 1871-1940) was a prominent British orientalist who after serving in India became Professor of Persian at University College London and then first Director of the School of Oriental Studies, later known as SOAS.

Printed wrappers, slightly chipped, signature of R. Sirajid Din on front panel which is loose, signed presentation inscription on half title--"[I?]anula Sarajiddin/a remembrance of/Kinnaird School Jubilee/Feb 22-25 1929/from Emily Kinnaird", some marginal and under lining, otherwise very good. Association copy. The Kinnaird School in Lahore was the oldest girls' school in Pakistan having been founded in 1864. It became the Kinnaird Academy in 1996. The name came from a titled Scottish family which helped support it. Lady Emily Kinnaird appears to have been a person of some substance from a Google reference indicating she called on Gandhi in 1940 to adopt Chistianity. The author, Jack Copley Winslow, wrote a number of books on Christianity in India between 1923 and 1968, one with Verrier Elwin.
