An outstanding collection of historic images from the collections of the Maharaja of Bikaner held in the sandstone palace named Lallgarh, now the Lallgarh Museum. Shri Naveen Patnaik (1946- ) has served India as a writer, intellectual and politician. He has written two other books as well as the catalogue for the Festival of India at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He has also been Chief Minister of Orissa State, a founding member of the Indian National Trust for Art, Ecology and Culture and a member of the Lok Sabha, the Indian Parliament. First Edition. xiv, 175pp, 55 (of 59) photo illustrations, 3 appendices. 4to/28.5cm. Decorated blue cloth gilt, armorial seal of princely state of Gwalior on front board (and all four end-papers), well worn and soiled with fraying some corners, bubbling front board, 2 small tears back board, top edges gilt, multiple faults internally including children's pencil scribbling few end pages, some foreign language marginalia, damp stains many pages, 4 photo plates missing as well as several captioned photo tissue protectors, hinges tender, corner torn off pp 173-4 (text appears unaffected), foxing, old mildew spots.Presentation inscription on ffep "With compliments/from/[signature illegible]". An extra copy of the plate opposite p 168 is laid in showing the Maharaja addressing an assemblage at Jayaji Square, Gwalior City, on Nov 27, 1918. Despite its many physical faults this is an unusual and highly interesting book. The printing of the embossed photographs, including many fine full-length portraits including of the King-Emperor George V and Queen Empress Mary, the Maharaja Scindia, 2 Viceroys and other high officials, including a local official in picturesque local costume opposite p 146 is outstanding though staining, spotting and other faults on the margins of the plates occasionally run into the images. The compiler, Mohammad Rafiullah, was a member of the Foreign Department of the pre-1948 princely state of Gwalior in Rajasthan, near Agra. A reading copy. Manohar Malgonkar, born in 1913 grandson of the prime minister of a princely state has led an active life as soldier, civil servant, mine owner, candidate for parliament, prolific novelist and non-fiction author.
