BUCHANAN, FRANCIS, M.D.  A Journey from Madras Through the Countries of Mysore, Canara and Malabar. Probably Volume 8 of John Pinkerton's, The Best and Most Interesting Voyages and Travels in All Parts of the World
London, Longman, Hurst, Rees and Brown..and Cadell and Davies. 1811. N.D. [1808-1811?]. Plain wrappers (loose), edgeworn and chipped, text block intact but first and last pages (573 and 776) browned from exposure, old dampstain at edge of first few and last few leaves, otherwise clean, tight and very good. This is the 8th Chapter of Pinkerton's version of Francis Buchanan's work which was originally published in 3 volumes by W. Bulmer & Co, London for T. Cadell and W.Davies and Black, Parry & Kingsbury. On the front page of this piece, a footnote indicates "The long agricultural and commercial details [or the 1807 set] are omitted." At the foot of the last page (776) is printed "End of the Eighth Volume" and at the bottom left in very small print, "Strahan and Preston/Printers Street, London.". From the British Library catalog, the complete 17 volume Pinkerton set appears to have been printed between 1808 and 1814 and this volume in 1811. No maps or illustrations are present in this piece though there were a number of such in the entire set. Dr. Francis Buchanan (1762-1829) later known as Francis Hamilton but often referred to as Francis Buchanan-Hamilton was a Scottish physician who made significant contributions as a geographer, zoologist and botanist while living in India from 1794 to 1815. In 1803-4 he was surgeon to the Governor General of India, Lord Wellesley in Calcutta and also organized the Calcutta Alipore Zoo. After the defeat of Tippu Sultan in 1799, he was asked to survey southern India resulting in this treatise.
