Bombay, Kutub-Popular. N.d. (ca. 1953?). vii, 134pp, Preface. 12mo18.5cm. Decorated tan card-stock wrappers, closed tears on spine, small faint damp stain on edge, internally fine. A day in the life of a North Indian sweeper. Sensitive 3-page Preface by E.M. Forster pointing out the three possible solutions for the sweeper: Christ, Gandhi, and the flush system. Mulk Raj Anand (1905-2004) was a noted short story writer and probably the foremost Indian novelist of the thirties and forties. He also held the Tagore Chair of Comparative Literature at Punjab University, Chandigarh. Edward Morgan Forster (1879-1970) was an English short story writer, novelist and essayist who was especially known for his ironic and well plotted novels examining class differences and hypocrisy.
