Colombo, People's Press. 1953. First Edition. [x], 148pp, 24 photo illustrations, route map. 12mo/18cm. Printed card wrappers, slightly spotted and soiled, short closed split at tail of back joint, first few pages dampstained, small chip head of ffep, otherwise internally very good. Account of a left-wing Ceylonese trade unionist's visit to two peace congresses in China and Vienna via the Soviet Union, with associated tours. The author was General Secretary of the Government Clerical Service Union in Ceylon in the forties and subsequently Editor of People's Voice, a bi-weekly English language paper. Professor John Desmond Bernal (1901-1971), F.R.S. was a prominent British leftist and Vice President of the World Peace Council at the time of writing. He was also awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in 1953.

Colombo, M.D. Gunasera & Co. Ltd. 1965. Second Edition (1949). xxii, 311pp, map, 24 photo illustrations, bibliography, 19 page index. 8vo/22cm. Green cloth gilt, slightly rubbed at extremities, in chipped dj, internally clean, tight and very good. Foreword by Julius de Lanerolle pointing out that much of Dr. Wijesekera's text is from notes taken during the first Ethnological Survey of Ceylon the results of which were apparently never published. De Lanerolle had recommended to the Ministry of Education in 1934 that such a survey be conducted to back up the artifacts held by the Colombo Museum. He says, "As a reliable source-book his work is indispensable to all research workers in this field and will remain so for many years to come.".

WILBER, DONALD N.  The Land and People of Ceylon
Philadelphia and New York, J.B. Lippincott Company. (1963) 4th Printing. Portraits of the Nation Series. 157pp, map, many black & while photo illustrations, index. 8vo/21cm. Pictorial cloth, ex-library markings, otherwise clean and tight. A competent guidebook for young and old of the country now known as Sri Lanka. Donald Newton Wilber (1908-1997) was an area expert of the old school primarily experienced specialized in Iran but who became an early US government and CIA consultant and was able to broaden his scope to include Afghanistan, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, about all of which he wrote books. His last book, the autobiographic Adventures in the Middle East (1986) found him battling with his former government employers particularly the CIA, on the issue of censorship.
