London, Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co, Ltd. 1914. Later edition (1879). 240pp, frontis portrait of author, 15 illustrations. 16mo/16.5cm. Decorated cloth gilt, rubbed at extremities, light soil, rear hinge paper cracked, 3 word notation and stamp of Lahore book dealer on ffep, signature of previous owner ("Abdul Aziz Faruki/B.A. (Alig.)/Bombay 1919") on 2 front blanks, title page slightly browned from protective tissue of frontis portrait, notations in English and Arabic script (Urdu ?) on rear free end paper, otherwise clean and good. A copy of the famous and much reprinted imaginative work which helped to introduce Buddhism to the West. Sir Edwin Arnold (1832-1904) was an English poet, educator and journalist who had spent time in India in the 1850s as the principal of a small college in Poona.

In effect the third edition though the author chooses to describe it as, "Revised and completely reset." after the original edition of 1939 and a revised edition of 1942. xvii, 397, xiii pp, 3 maps, 75 monochrome illustrations from photographs by the author and friends, epilogue, index. Illustrated red cloth gilt, light wear, in edgeworn and slightly chipped dj, internally fine. An account of two trips to the Himalayan-Tibetan borderlands of Sikkim and Ladakh where he began his study of Buddhism and Buddhist art. Marco Pallis (1895-1989), mountaineer, musician, art historian and Buddhist, was initiated into a traditional Buddhist lineage as Thubden Tendzin. He makes a strongly worded statement in an "Additional note" to his Introduction that in view of the substantial changes he had made to the text, "the present version of the book is the only one to be regarded as fully authoritative and any prospective translators into foreign tongues must be sure and base themselves on the American text, no other."
