Volume XXV, First Edition. 690, [ii] pp, large double-sided folding map in front pocket dated 1908 with Manhattan and the Bronx on one side and six road maps of parts of Long Island on the other, detailed index (including to previous volumes), many adverts (including full page), innumerable other details of life, business and culture in the new Borough (former City) of Brooklyn, also known as Kings County. Red cloth gilt, light soil, small splits head of spine, ca. 3/8" damp stain foot of front board, light wear and soil, otherwise clean, tight and very good. The Brooklyn Daily Eage was a newspaper published in Brooklyn, New York from 1845 to 1955 with a short-lived revival in the sixties. At one time it was the most popular afternoon paper in the United States and its distinguished Editors included Walt Whitman, St. Clair McKelway, Thomas Kinsella, Cleveland Rogers and Charles Montgomery Skinner.

Red cloth gilt, spine and front board lightly faded, light edgewear, 3 marks back board, Lacks pocket map, internally clean, tight and very good, otherwise clean, tight and very good. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle which was published from 1845 to 1955 (with a brief later revival) was one of the nation's leading dailies and its distinguished editors included Walt Whitman, Cleveland Rogers, Thomas Kinsella, St. Clair McKelway, Frank Schroth and Charles Montgomery Skinner.Among the many illustrated adverts, this volume has seating charts of Brooklyn and New York Theatres.

Brooklyn, L. Darbee & Son, Book & Job Printers. 1861. First Edition. 80pp, 3 folding colored lithograph views, appendix, 2 folding plans. 8vo/23cm. Green blind-stamp decorated cloth gilt, rubbed at corners, beginning fray at spine ends, back hinge cracked, 2 previous owner signatures on ffep (Charles B. Wenman, Nov 8, 1924; James P. Hurley, 1968), some offsetting of views, plans fragile with some folds cracked but intact, otherwise clean and very good. Cover has gilt titling, "Prospect Park/Brooklyn,/ by / Egbert L. Viele". A rare copy of the plan to have the designer of Central Park, Egbert L.udovicus Viele (1825-1902) design Prospect Park in Brooklyn. The Civil War intervened and the park was subsequently created from the designs of Calvert Vaux and his colleague Frederick Law Olmsted. Rare. No copies listed in LC or on OCLC but one found in the Harvard University on-line catalogue.

First Edition. viii, 500pp, frontis portrait plus 27 monochrome illustrations including 6 maps and plans (some with tissue protectors), 11 appendices, index. Tall 8vo/24.5cm. Green cloth gilt, old seal of the City of Brooklyn on spine, rubbed at extremities, front hinge partly cracked, back hinge cracked, binding cords broken, otherwise internally clean and good. One of the most authoritative of the early histories of Brooklyn. Volume 2 of 3. Dr. Henry Reed Stiles (1832-1909) physician, genealogist and local historian also wrote much on Connecticut and New England matters. David McCullough, author of The Great Bridge (1972) says that "he wrote the best history of Brooklyn ever written" and despite the older fashioned non-footnoted style it is written in, that may be the way most of those currently researching Brooklyn history would describe it. Copies of this origiinal edition are scarce.

The first printed catalogue of the Long Island Historical Society's library consisting of some forty five thousand works amassed in its first thirty years of operation. Organized in 1863, it is still in operation though its name was changed in the late twentieth century to the Brooklyn Historical Society. Rev. Richard Salter Storrs (1821-1900), author, orator and distinguished Minister of the Church of the Pilgrims, Brooklyn, was then President of The Long Island Historical Society.
