| SHAHEEN, JACK G. Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies A People. Foreword by William Greider Brooklyn, NY, Olive Branch Press. 2001. First Edition. viii, 574pp, Foreword, Introduction, Reviewed Films A-Z, Notes, 10 appendices, index. 8vo/23cm. Paper, light, one ex-library stamp on top edge (no other marks), shelf wear only, internally fine. VG. In the principal section of this book, more than nine hundred films going back to 1905 are reviewed for their spoken or visual anti-Arab stereotypical images. From the evidence he has amassed, it looks to be an overwhelming indictment of Hollywood treatment of the subject. In essence he says, the word "Arab" has remained Hollywood's shorthand for 'bad guy'. And it is not inconceivable that some of the American soldiers who have perpetrated the abuse of Arab prisoners in Abu Graib and Guantanamo as well as in other places and circumstances have been affected in their earlier lives by such images. Jack G. Shaheen (1935- ) is Professor Emeritus of Mass Communications at Southern Illinois University and the author of Arab and Muslim Stereotyping in American Popular Culture, and other associated works.
