He participated in and later led mission planning activities for Mariner Mars 1971, Mariner Venus-Mercury 1973, early phases of Viking, Voyager and the series of Mars missions beginning in the 1990's. In the 1980's, he worked as the mission design and operations manager of the then-Mars Rover Sample Return pre-project and subsequently represented the robotic exploration element in various NASA Mars initiatives. Prior to his retirement from JPL in 2000, he was responsible for coordinating the international connections in the worldwide efforts to explore the Red Planet. NASA awarded him an Exceptional Service Medal and he has been elected to the International Academy of Astronautics. He is now a part-time consultant and full-time skier." (from Wikipedia). "Richard Phillips Feynman (May 11, 1918 – February 15, 1988) was an American theoretical physicist, known for his work in the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics, the theory of quantum electrodynamics, the physics of the superfluidity of supercooled liquid helium, as well as his work in particle physics for which he proposed the parton model. For his contributions to the development of quantum electrodynamics, Feynman received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965 jointly with Julian Schwinger and Shin'ichiro Tomonaga. Feynman developed a widely used pictorial representation scheme for the mathematical expressions describing the behavior of subatomic particles, which later became known as Feynman diagrams. During his lifetime, Feynman became one of the best-known scientists in the world. In a 1999 poll of 130 leading physicists worldwide by the British journal Physics World, he was ranked the seventh-greatest physicist of all time. "(from Wikipedia). PAUWELS, HERMAN J., Noise Sources Describing Quantum Effects in the Laser Oscillator Technical Report 453
PAUWELS, HERMAN J.
Noise Sources Describing Quantum Effects in the Laser Oscillator Technical Report 453
Cambridge, MA: Massachusetts Institute of Technology Research Laboratory of Electronics, 1966. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Paperback. Graphs; This is a technical Report with cardstock covers and a glued binding. This report is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The report and its contents are in clean, bright condition. There is some light fading / toning to the gray cardstock covers. The text pages are clean and bright. "With quantum noise in the laser we mean those properties of the laser output that are caused by the quantum nature of the electromagnetic field and of the material systems and reservoirs with which it interacts. It is shown that a fully quantum-mechanical treatment of the laser can be formulated in a noise-source formalism, for which the noise sources are operators." The author, Herman J. Pauwels graduated with a Masters Degree from MIT in 1964 and was continuing on at MIT in the Ph. D. Program - this report is based on a thesis which was submitted by Pauwels to the Department of Defense which then partially fulfilled the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. While at MIT Mr. Pauwels worked for the Bell Telephone company and while there is very little information on the author after this time, it appears he continued to work in the field of lasers and electronics / radio transmission and helped co-author several other articles (at least one can be found in the Journal of Quantum Electronics). There are five copies of this report found in Worldcat and currently none on offer to the trade.. Very Good+ .

Paris, France: Gauthier-Villars Imprimeur-Editeur, 1948. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Paperback. B&W Illustrations; This is a trade sized paperback with light cardstock covers and a glued spine. The book is in Very Good- condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The covers have noticeable fading / toning. The spine has chips to both ends and some light nicks and chipping to the cover edges. The text pages are clean, but noticeably toned. "The gravitational force is a force that attracts any object with mass. Every object, including you, is pulling on every other object in the entire universe! This is called Newton's Universal Law of Gravitation. Admittedly, you don't have a very large mass and so, you're not pulling on those other objects much. And objects that are really far apart from each other don't pull on each other noticeably either. But the force is there and we can calculate it. While dealing with gravitational forces, we come across masses. Masses are always positive so the product of masses always gives positive value. The nature of gravitational force is attractive or in other words inwards. Hence, negative sign is given for the gravitational force due to its inward direction Electrostatics is a branch of physics that deals with the phenomena and properties of stationary or slow-moving electric charges.". "The problem with which we shall be concerned is the noise performance of a multiterminal-pair amplifier used in conjunction with a multiterminal-pair signal source. We shall investigate the values of signal-to-noise ratio and exchangeable signal power that can be obtained at a single-output terminal pair by interconnecting such a source and amplifier." (from Wikipedia) The author, William D. Rummler has received at least one patent in the area of radio communications and became a member of IEEE in 1989 for Radio Communication. He worked for a number of years for Bell Telephone. He is best known for his work in the area of Signal-to-Noise Ratio (which relates to this technical report) which measures the relationship of the signal to background noise that can hamper clarity. Old Grennwich, CT: Space-Time Studies), 1979. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; This book is in Very Good+ condition and has a Very Good- dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The price clipped dust jacket has several edge tears, nicks, a couple of medium sized chips and some generalized rubbing to the paper. This book contains a number of papers by Herbert E. Ives who did not believe that Einstein's Theory of Relativity was correct - he proceeded to perform experiments which would prove his hypothesis -- and in the process, actually proved (though he believed otherwise) that the "relativistic time dilation to the Doppler shift of light" Einstein theorized was indeed correct. (this experiment is known as the "Ives–Stilwell experiment"). This book includes letters to physicists, his own notes, experiments, etc, from and to Ives regarding his somewhat obsessive idea that Einstein's Theories were incorrect. This book is somewhat scarce.. Very Good+ in Very Good- dust jacket .

The courses were intended to present an introduction to the expanse of modern mathematics and its application in Modern physics. The book gives an introductory perspective to young students intending to go into a field of pure mathematics, and who, with the usual pigeon-holed graduate curriculum, will not get an overall perspective for several years, much less any idea of application."
