Written by a leading architectural and social historian Mark Girouard in a lively style. The work considers the architectural and interior design merits of each property as well as looking at political and social aspects of the development of the great houses. Properties range from Castle Howard, Brighton Pavillion and Chatsworth to smaller Nation Trust properties such as tapestry rich Cotehele and the Lutyens rebulit Lindisfarne Castle. Illustrations include color photgraphs and reproductions of contemporary paintings. Colour illustrated end papers. Book itself is clean and bright with only minimal edge wear; clean and bright dw is slightly rubbed and bumped.
