London,William Brodie Gurney;Joseph Gurney and Thomas Gurney,1841. 1st Edition,tall 8vo,iv prelims,123pp text,1pp.Good in original stamped brown cloth,gilt spine titles,pale yellow end papers.Worn at spine extremities,marked boards and some edge staining.Original owner's signature,H.Macloud 1841,on front paste down together with the book label of Alfred Wallis F.R.S.L.Internally clean and tight.Alfred Wallis although only 10 years of age when the case was heard obviously took a keen interest in this duelling contest and has filled one blank at the front and 2 blanks at the rear with interesting comments."A more absurd legal farce was never acted.Lord Cardigan's aquittal was obtained through the culpable failure of the case for the Crown to give proof that the person named in the indictment,Capt.Tuckett,was thesame as the person whose bodily injuries were the subject of enquiry."Capt Tuckett did not attend the proceedings to show his wounds.The duel arose from an Officer's Mess argument by Lord Cardigan who objected to the wine being served in "Black Bottles".Alfred Wallis relates," Foremost in the list of malcontents was Capt.Reynolds,whom I afterwards knew rather intimately when he lived in Derby,known as B.B.(Black Bottle) Reynolds.Port in a cardigan was the usual order when a party of bon-vivants desired to have their wine sent up undecanted."Numerous other anecdotes relating to the principals are included.
