Alexandre Dumas's serialized "Traveling Sketches", Charles MacKay's "Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds" serialized, a announcement of the pending arrival of Charles Dickens in New York and an account of the ball held to great him, a review of Heine's work by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, a profile of Thomas DeWitt, Thomas Hood's "Tower of Lahneck", Sir Edward Lytton Bulwer's serialized novel "Zanoni", and the first appearance of several poems by William Wordsworth "Maternal Grief", "Address to the Clouds", "Suggested by a Picture of the Bird of Paradise", "Guilt and Sorrow", Coleridge "Ghosts", and Goethe's "The Story of Margaret" from Faust. This is the first appearance or the first American appearance of many of these pieces. The journals are bound in half-leather with marble boards. The binding has become detached and is very rough. The outer pages of the journals are torn and folded but the interior pages are complete and supple. Varying degrees of age-wear and soiling throughout. Still very legible.
