GREGORY, OLINTHUS / THIRD EDITION, REVISED AND ENLARGED BY HENRY LAW   MATHEMATICS for Practical Men: Being a Common-Place Book of Pure and Mixed Mathematics
London, John Weale 1848, hb. Ill.: engravings. Bound in contemporary half leather over marbled boards. Thick 8vo, pp. xix, 392, 118. With 13 folding engravings, incl. several of "Locomotive engines on the Great Western Railway". Â
   ¶ First published in 1825 as a volume "designed chiefly for the use of civil engineers, architects, and surveyors" and re-published, with minor corrections, in 1833. This, the third edition, was signficantly corrected and enlarged, and contained more plates than the previous two editions. Law was a contemporary of Isambart Kingdom Brunel (the designer of the famous steam ship The Great Eastern), to whom he dedicated this book. Bookplate of W. H. Darracott on inside front board. Front joint cracked, but binding still intact. Boards worn and quite rubbed. Old tide stain to bottom third of first few preliminary pages and several plates; else text clean and unmarked. Inevitable fraying to edges of folding plates, with some soiling to one or two. Not a handsome copy, but quite readable and may be handled without trepidation.

   ¶ "Containing (besides what is common on the subject) a number of New Improvements in the Theory: and the solution of a variety of new and very interesting problems, in different branches of mathematics. / A New Edition, carefully revised, and adapted, by copious appendixes, to the present advanced state of science. By a graduate of the University of Cambridge." Issued in two volumes, of which this is volume II. Simpson (1710-1761) was a mathematician who the DNB describes as "the oracle of Nuneaton, Bosworth, and the environs." He was elected to the Royal Society in 1745. The first edition of this book was entiteld "New Treatise on Fluxions", and was published in 1737. It was subsequently revised and issued in 1750 as "The Doctrine and Application of Fluxions." Boards worn and soiled. Endpapers split but binding still reasonably tight. Occasional light foxing, else contents clean and unmarked. A good copy.

   ¶ Simson (1687-1768) was a mathematician and professor of mathematics in the University of Glasgow from 1712 to 1761. This work was first published in Latin in 1735 as "Sectionum Conicarum". The fourteen folding plates have not been placed as directed, but are bound in at the end of the book. They are all in very good condition, with only light foxing and a bit of creasing. The binding of the book shows noticeable wear. Early former owner's name on half-title page; some light foxing and occasional soiling to contents. Overall, in good plus condition.
