| , THEY SHALL NOT PERISH Campaign for $30, 000, 000 / American Committee for Relief in the Near East / Armenia - Greece - Syria - Persia. . This the original lithograph printed by the American Lithographic Co. The image is a female with arm up holding a sword which is angled horizontally across the top of the image with a shield behind it. The figure has a helmet-like hat in red, white, and blue stars and stripes. The figure is clothed in a long dress with many folds. An American flag comes from the right of the figure around her back, then down and around a young girl who is clutching the legs of a female figure. The background is a dark charcoal, the background of the text at the bottom of the poster is a light grey. The main colors are white, cream, grey, soft blue, and a bright red and soft red. This poster was designed and executed by Douglas Volk. His name is printed in written characters on the poster with a 1918 date. His monogram is above the plate signature, in white. (Douglas Volk b. 1856 - d. 1935. He studied under Jean-Leon Gerome at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He was professor and and the first director at the Minneaolis School of Fine Arts in the years before and after 1890. He was a portrait artist, some with detailed landscape backgrounds. He was also well known for historical paintings. There are three horizontal and one vertical fold marks - gentle, soft folds. The image is in fine condition, the edges of the poster have some wear - three corners are chipped (nickel size) . There is a closed tear a little above the center on the left that extends into the image about 3/4 of an inch, then in an up direction for about two inches - closed tear. There is an edge chip at the top - about 3/4" into the margin from the edge. There are two pin punctures in the margin about 1 inch away from the image - top left corner. The paper is generally crisp and clean. No smudges, no foxing. The poster is covered with an acetate. The acetate and lighting creates a vertical glare that is not present on the print. All folds are soft folds, not hard creased. The image size is 37" h x 24 7/8" w. The outside dimensions of the poster are 40" h x 30" w. The poster will be carefully packaged. -. | FAIVRE, ABEL, 4E. EMPRUNT DE LA DEFENSE NATIONALE. Paris: Pichot, Imp, 1918. Original lithographic World War 1 poster. In the days before radio broadcasts and cinema, the poster served the purpose of graphic communicati on. Citizens were persuaded to enlist, ration, and work hard in the industries. Many posters rallied citizens to contribute to war loans. In this poster by a famous French poster artist, a loan is requested to liberate Alsace. The Kaiser is bent over his broken sword and is weighted down by flags of the victorious countries. The artist is Abel Faivre. It is a call to contribute to the National Defense. This is one in a series of four flag posters by Faivre. This poster is often used in books about posters to illustrate poster propaganda and military posters. The condition of this poster is generally clean. It has been folded and fold creases are noticeable in a close up look. There are about five very short closed tears in the paper at a few of the foldmark corners. There is a closed tear extending from the edge of the paper through the margin and into the image about 1/2 inch (lower left bottom edge) . There are some light smudge marks in the top margin. There are two tiny spots in the right margin, one pencil point size, the other a small pencil eraser size. The lower left corner has some chipping. Please request additional images or descriptions of condition. The outside dimensions of the paper are 31 1/2" H x 44 3/4" W. This print is not backed in linen. It is presently laid on foam core board with an acid free backing paper. There is no hinging or adhesives. It does not appear that adhesives were ever used. | FALTER, MARCEL, POUR LE SUPREME EFFORT. EMPRUNT NATIONAL SOCIETE GENERALE. Paris: Imp. Chaix, 1918. Original lithograph of a World War 1 propaganda poster by the artist Marcel Falter. The image depicts a French soldier choking and ending the life of a Prussian eagle. It was designed to appeal to the resoluteness of the cause and to generate funds to pay war loans. This poster has been folded and there are some short closed tears at some of the fold corners. There is light soiling towards the center of the lower portion of the poster. In other areas there are hints of smudge or lithographic ink. There is a one inch+ closed tear in the left margin that does not extend into the image. The upper left corner has a crese and a puncture. There are other svery short closed tears and light edge chipping. Please request additional images or descriptions of condition, if needed. The outside dimensions of the paper are 47 1/4" H x 31 1/4" W. This print is not backed in linen. It is presently laid on foam core board with an acid free backing paper. | SHERIDAN, JOHN. E., "HEY FELLOWS". New York: American Lithographic Co, 1918. Original lithograph propaganda poster from World War 1. It requests donations to buy books for American servicemen. The text reads - Your Money Brings The Book We Need When We Want It. It is sponsored by the American Library Association, United War Campaign - and was used in the week of November 11, 1918. The poster has been folded and fold marks are obvious when observed closely. There is a closed tear at a fold mark corner. There are a few closed tears at the edges, one extends into the image, but is not very visible. The colors are bright, the print is quite clean. The size is 30 1/4" high x 20" wide. The print is not backed in linen. It is presented on foam core with a layer of acid free paper backing it, but without adhesives or hinges. It does not appear that adhesives were ever used. 30 1/4" H x 20" W.
