| KAMIL, NEIL Fortress of the Soul: Violence, Metaphysics, and Material Life in the Huguenots' New World, 1517-1751 Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A., Johns Hopkins Univ Press, 2004. (ISBN: 0801873908) Hard Cover with dust jacket, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall, Very Good/Very Good, Very nice copy of a massive book. Only measures 7-1/4"x10-1/4", but is 2" thick. Red boards are very clean and unbumped, pages are likwise pristine with no names or writing, and dustjacket shows no tears or chips. Only fault is light edgewear, but it is most handsome in brand new mylar cover. The author offers a detailed history of the arrival and material culture of the French Huguenots who landed in America during the 17th and 18th centuries from the Aunis-Saintonge region of France. Their presence, their religion, and their artistry, especially in the making of fine furniture, had a huge impact on colonial New York. These artisans had derived inspiration from Bernard Palissey, a potter, alchemist and philospher, whose beliefs informed not only their art, but also their discrete religious identity and the fluidity with which they worked and operated in the community. This is a scholarly examination of the very complex Huguenot world-view and the effect of that view of what they created, both materially and socially. Book is illustrated with both art and photographs in black and white. 1058 pages. USD 75.00 [Appr.: EURO 50.25 | £UK 45.25 | JP¥ 6619] Book number: 18194 Click here to order or inquire at Garrison House Books. | ||
