A fascinating look at how the political and social change which swept through Great Britain during the 80's left its mark on all of the British Isles and their inhabitants from the highlands of Scotland, to the remote sheep farms, to the major money markets. | CONYBEARE, MRS. C.A.V. The Reform Bill and Women's Suffrage (Rare English Political leaflet) , England: Women's Liberal Federation, 1911. /, Soft Cover. Very Good. October 10, 1911. Hopes were high in 1883 that the proposed Reform Act of Great Britain would give women the vote. However, the next year Parliament passed the act itself, but denied the vote, leading suffragettes to form the Women's Liberal Federation led by Countess Carlisle. Unfortunately, it soon became obvious that the new group was getting little results and members began questioning their leader, a devotee of Asquith who brooked no criticism of his antisuffrage beliefs. And so an off-shoot group, the Liberal Women's Suffrage Society, sprang up in 1887. Despite such division in the ranks, however, the Women's Liberal Federation kept on, thanks to the work of suffragettes such as Mrs. C.A.V. Conybeare, who prided herself on her more moderate views and ability to maintain a peaceful gathering. In 1915, for example, she mounted a wagon that served as a platform for a gathering in Dartford and held forth on being at once anti-militant and comiitted to the rights of law-abiding women to vote, yet also willing to face rotten eggs if the need should arise. (It didn't). This leaflet, printed on both sides by John Heywood Ltd. of Manchester, known previously as a printer of Victorian street ballads, measures 5-1/2x8/12" and is very clean with just a bit of browning to edges from age and a small bit of wear to top edge. Notation of Bible verse scribbled in pencil at bottom rear side. Though they were printed in large numbers, it is unusual to find a surviving suffrage leaflet. Will send scan upon request.
