The Beacon; Magazine of the Virginia State Penitentiary August 1939
, Virginia State Penitentiary, 1939, August, 1939. Soft Cover, Very Good/Wraps, Very Good, This is an unusual relic of the Virginia State Penitentiary -- the August 1939 issue of The Beacon, a publication intended for inmates and their families. Magazine is in good conditon -- very clean. Only faults are a tiny snip off the lower front corner and a small tear at lower spine. Inside the front cover are the rules and regulations, of which we found this one amusing; "Musical instruments are permitted within the institution, and concerts are held frequently on the ball park, to which, however, the public is not invited. Occasional hours of practice are permitted in the cell house building and the groaning trombone, the hoop-de-hoop sax, the guitar, tenor banjo, ukele, and other musical instruments are heard -- if you care to listen."The main article addresses the affect of environment on crime and is followed by a literary column, a stamp collectors' corner, prison jokes and general prison news. Interesting items here include notice of a special "colored" church service, a report of an athlete's foot break-out, which is referred to as "pyorrhea between the toes." Also, info on sports. 16 pages
