| Gold Medal Flour Cook Book Minneapolis, Washburn-Crosby Co., 1917. Soft Cover, Very Good/Wraps, Good, Amazing what just one primary color and a mix of neutral shades can produce when it comes to graphic art. This turn-of-the-century cookbook filled with recipes for using the flour we still recognize today by its tell-tale orange label is just wonderful -- it even still has unused coupons at the back for cookbooks to be sent to friends. While the graphics are what catch the eye, the recipes aren't bad either and run the gamut from baked goods to entrees and meats. All are clearly laid-out with the list of ingredients at the top followed by the instructions as is done today. So often in old cookbooks things can be a bit vague, but with this one you can actually go into the kitchen and create a meal. The book measures 8"x11" and has 47 pages. The brown cover shows wear and the old paper is soft, but it still has much life to live if gently cared for. The cover has pulled away from the bottom front staple, but the pages and back cover are securely fastened throughout. With the exception of a bit of soil to edges of first page, the rest of the pages are remarkably clean and nice. Altogether a lovely find. McNess name is still known for agribusiness serving the dairy, swine and beef industries. This catalog came along at least two decades after the quaint delivery system, but is nonetheless filled with vintage charm from its wonderful cover art of a mother and two children expressing great delight at the sight of a chocolate pie made using McNess vanilla extract and canned "chocolate dessert" to its great photos of the period and wonderful recipes from all over the world.
