  The Beacon Hill Collection as Interpreted By Carson Pirie Scott & Co. (1942 Letter from Company laid-in)
Chicago, Carson Pirie Scott, Fourth Edition. Hard Cover, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall, Very Good/No DJ, as Issued, Clean, solid, hard bound book handsomely designed with orange cover printed in black on orange paper at faceboard. Black cloth spine. Though there is no date in the book, there is a letter signed by Gordon L. Pirie laid-in dated January 3, 1942 to a customer who had bought pieces from the collection previously. Book is clean and tightly bound with no names or writing. Small bit of wear at crown of spine and to two upper corners only faults. Nice maps endpapers and beautiful full page photos in black and white highlighting each peice of furniture with caption. The Beacon Hill collection was inspired by the design and craftsmanship of of 18th century and includes pieces for the living room, dining room and bedroom. 197 pages. Indexed. Measures 8"x10-3/4" The company has long been a Chicago landmark (since 1854). They have also been associated with the great Chicago architect Louis Sullivan after purchasing and expanding in 1904 a building he did for retailer, Schlesinger & Meyer.

  Oriental Reproductions By Karastan; Souvenir of a Century of Progress 1933 Chicago World's Fair
New York, Karastan Rug Mills, 1933. Soft Cover, Very Good/Wraps, very Good, A more unusual souvenir from the Century of Progress 1933 World's Fair, this beautiful booklet issued by Karastan is a treasure. It measures approximately 6"x10" and features a purple and white cover with a soft painting of a Middle Eastern bazaar on the front. Inside, each page is graced by a small color artwork at the bottom corner featuring some aspect of desert life. The focus, however, is on rugs so the main art (large) shows a split page full color look at the original rug and its Karasta reproduction. There is also background on the rugs in general, as well as Karastan's approach to them. Unpaginated, but we counted 14. Very clean condition with two small stains at white back.

Guide is comprised of 80 pages discussing weeds, how to know good seed, why Scott's seeds are economical, alfalfa, Grimm alfalfa, sweet clover, hubam, the true clovers, red clover, mammoth, alsike, crimson and white clover, soybeans, vetch, field peas and cow peas, timothy, pasture mixtures, corn, wheat, oats, rye, barley, buckwheat, Scott's bacteria, and points about ordering. Bound with three white ribbon tabs as per photo. Measures roughly 8"x10" Text is taken from a lecture delivered October 11, 1978 at the The Rowfant Club of Cleveland, a bibliographic organization begun in the city in the 1890's. Illustrated with photos in black and white, plus drawings, all on heavy cream paper. Of special interest is the orginal dustjacket for the the Great Gatsby, as well as a Maxfield Parrish program cover for an 1897 Scribner Christmas dinner. Book also contains information on the publisher's distinctive coplophon, the story of how Charles Scribner III came to use the desk owned by the legendary editor Maxwell Perkins and the desk's connection with Thomas Wolfe and what was unexpectedly and belatedly found in it. But the majority of the text tells the story of one of America's most important publishing firms. A must have for collectors of books about books.

Wonderful collector piece with much historical information on Samuel Colt and the company he founded, plus an entire section designed to walk the reader through the factory to see step by step how a gun is made. We are pleased to offer this very scarce speech delivered by the infamous Richard Whitney, the man who in 1929 was lauded as a hero during the Stock Market Crash, elected president of the New York Stock Exchange in 1930 and in 1938 was led away in handcuffs to Sing Sing while 6000 onlookers crowded Grand Central Station to witness the spectacle.Whitney was convicted of embezzlement, the result of years of speculative trading that left him so deeply in debt that he turned to embezzlement. Not only did he steal from the New York Stock Exchange, but also from both the New York Yacht Club, of which he served as treasurer, and his father-in law's estate. He served less than four years and after his release lived quietly until his death in 1974.The speech is printed on heavy cream paper and there is a laid-in slip which reads "Compliments of Richard Whitney, President New York Stock Exchange." There is no toning to pages and no fault of any kind. Plain grey wrappers show small crease to upper rear corner and a very superficial one to upper front. 20 pages of text.

Written upon the occasion of Cargill's 100th anniversary. Traces the company's beginnings in Scotland to the creation of its first grain storage facility in early America in 1865 to its place in American industry in 1965. Today Cargill is one of the largest privately-owned businesses supplying food, agricultural and risk management products and services in the world. 154 pages.
