| STEINER, ANN Reading Greek Vases , Cambridge University Press, 2007. (ISBN: 0521825229) Hard Cover with dust jacket, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall, NEW/New, Crisp BRAND NEW still in orginal publisher's shrinkwrap. The first comprehensive study of the role of repetition beyond aesthetic value as part of a code which conveys meaning to the viewer. The author relies on theoretical background provided through information theory and narratology to uncover the different types of meaning that the early vase painters created through their use of repetition. She uses the reading of painted verbal inscriptions as a springboard to demonstrate how repetitious imagery in multiple fields of a vase can result in narration, paradigm, exploration of perceptual and ideological point of view and parody. She also shows how the results of repetition on Archaic Athenian vases reiterate activities of the elite, as well as the broader cultural values held by the elite. Altogether an entirely new way of studying ancient Athenian vases.
