Boston, Small, Maynard and Company, 1912, No Edition Stated. Hard Cover, 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall, Ex-Library, Very Good/No DJ, as Issued, Lovely little book and hard to find. Previously owned by museum library as indicated by bookplate on front pastedown, but appears to have been non-circulating. Only other indicator of ownership is small embossing to bottom of title page and light spot on spine from former sticker. Crisp, clean pages throughout, tightly bound, and bright cover art. Some soiling to back board only exterior defect. The author, William Everett Cram (1871-1947) was a New Englander who wrote many books and articles about history and natural history, including "American Mammals" which he co-authored with Witner Stone. To find this was indeed a treat! Not only is it scarce, but it's in beautiful condition. The art, rendered by the author, is just charming (29 illustrations in all) and the text highly accessible to the modern reader, as the author ruminates on the many animals he studied on his long rambles through the fields and woods of his native New England. There are deer, lynx, gray rabbits, northern hares, woodchucks and chipmunks, many mice including the jumping kind, raccoons, possum, skunks, porcupines, moles, bats, beavers, and water shrews galore. 303 pages.

Chicago, Illinois, The Percheron Horse Association of America, 1939. Soft Cover, Folio - over 12" - 15" tall, Very Good/Good-plus, Very nice copy of a hard to find old magazine which began publication in 1928. This April issue from 1939 is most attractive and oversized at 12" tall. Staples have pulled away, but text has been neatly restapled and is holding firm. Front cover shows tearing at spine top and bottom, but this, too, has been mended -- with almost invisible archival tape to prevent further damage. Pages are clean with only an errant smudge inside and a band of soiling to top of cover. In addition to great ads, there are stories about horse shows around the country, a personal experience piece about a motor trip through the east and the wonderful herds seen, and others on the ways and means of controlling sleeping sickness in horses, news about plans to help the Percheron breeder and much more. One highlight is a piece by retail giant J.C. Penney, who in addition to his entrepreneurial activites was anoted breeder of Guernsey cattle and Percheron horses. It's entitled "Good Herds and Flocks Are Not Enough -- We Must Look to Their Permanency; Hand In Hand with Our Breeding Program Goes Maintenance of Soil Fertility." Wonderful photos of horses throughout. 74 pages.
