The inscription is a simple "Best Wishes to Roger Kahn". While it is difficult to know for certain that this is the famous sportswriter and author of "The Boys of Summer", it is probably him. There was a connection between Kelly and Kahn. Kelly wrote the preface to the posthumously published book by John Lardner (Ring Lardner's son), "The World of John Lardner". He was a close friend of Lardner. Kahn wrote the epilog to the book and succeeded Lardner as sports editor at Newsweek. Front endpaper a bit edge chipped and professionally reattached. Text moderately toned, most significantly at edges. Covers modestly edge worn. Spine moderately out of line (a lean to the left). Very good -. Subscriber name printed on the limitation page. The Dutch cartoonist's wartime work was a powerful statement against alleged German atrocities in Belgium. Published in the month of the United States entry into the war, Roosevelt's Foreword was dated on the very day of the formal declaration of war by the United States. Wonderful production values with 126 tipped-in plates, most in color. A remarkable collection. The interior is clean, bright, soundly bound, and the plates are uniformly undamaged. The cloth jackets are lightly soiled and the edges slightly frayed. Apparenlty produced with a slipcase not present here. Very good+.
