| SMITH (CHARLES) The Ancient and Present State of the County and City of Cork. Containing a Natural, Civil, Ecclesiastical, Historical and Topographical Description Thereof. Printed for W. Wilson, Dublin. 1774. Second Edition, with additions, 2 vols., x,xiv,[15]-429,[3, adverts]; viii,[9]-437,[9]pp., with errata/directions to binder leaf, engraved portrait frontispiece, 13 engraved plates (some large folding), one extra engraved plate added as frontispiece to volume II, recent half calf, spine gilt with leather labels. Charles Smith, MD (1715-1762) was one of Ireland’s earliest topographers and county historians as well as being a physician. Having worked on his histories of Down (1744) & Waterford (1746) he then went on to issue the history of the County and City of Dublin, first published in 1750 with this second edition appearing in 1774. This was then followed by a history of County Kerry published in 1756. The engraved plates include: large folding- prospect of Youghal, prospect of Kinsale, new plan of the city of Cork (a couple of small closed tears, upper left corner torn away but not effecting image), view of the city of Cork.
