NICOL (WALTER)  The Practical Planter, or, a Treatise on Forest Planting: Comprehending the Culture and Management of Planted and Natural Timber, in every stage of its growth: Also, on the Culture and Management of Hedge Fences, and the Construction of Stone Walls, &c.
Printed for the Author, Edinburgh. 1799. First Edition, xi,[i],430pp., without the half-title, with the armorial bookplate of John Plumtre, cont. calf, re-backed, morocco label. Walter Nicol trained under his father, head gardener at Raith Estate, Fife. His first major undertaking was to improve the walled garden at neighbouring Wemyss Castle. Like many Scotch gardeners he migrated to England where he became head gardener to the Marquees of Townshend at Raynham, Norfolk. His work was highly praised, equalling those of Abercombie. But due to ill health he returned to Edinburgh in 1797 were he continued as a horticultural designer and author. An advert leaf in this work provides details of his services: “The Author surveys and gives Designs for Gardens, Hot Houses, Shrubberies, Parks, Approaches, &c. in the most approved taste. Also, gives advice and examples for thinning and pruning of neglected plantations, in every stage of their own growth, according to locality of situation; with proper memorandums, relative to their future culture. Terms One Guinea per Day; with Travelling Charges on Horseback, or by Stage Coach.” In 1810 he undertook an extensive trip to the principal gardens and estates in England in order to obtain more information for his planed work “Planters Kalendar”, but he died suddenly in 1811 and the book was completed and published by Edward Sang. Henrey, 1178.
