Consisting of two plays ‘The Fortunate Disappointment’ and ‘Domestic Woe’, written by Miss C. Short for a Society of Young Ladies. With a final leaf of gratitude to the authors poetical Friend, Miss Seward [Anna Seward], for her help.“These little Drama’s were written for a Society of Young Ladies, in whose welfare and improvement I am warmly interested; and as they have proved beneficial to this small circle, in promoting the habit of speaking with grace and propriety, I conceived they might be useful to others in similar situations, and therefore determined to present them to the public”. —Preface. | [BACON (FRANCIS)] The Essayes or Councels, Civill and Morall, of Francis Lo. Verulam, Viscount St.Alban. Printed by John Haviland. 1632. Small 4to, [vi],340,[42]pp., lacking initial and final blank leaves, A4 laid-down, lower corner of first seven leaves repaired (without loss of text), a couple of other leaves with minor repairs, with Henry Yates Thompson’s notes on front endpaper (see below), book label of Fanny Strutt on the front pastedown, later full calf by R. Riley with red ribbon ties, morocco label to spine. “N.B. The first edition of Bacon’s Essays dated 1597 is a diminutive volume in 12mo, & contains only ten essays, with a Dedication to “M. Anthony Bacon, his deare brother”. Of this edition there were several re-impressions. In 1612 when Bacon was solicitor-general he issued an enlarged volume in small 8vo containing 38 essays. This was reprinted in 1613, 1614, 1618 all in 8vo & there were also editions in 4to in 1622, 1623 & 1624. In his retirement after his fall Bacon again revised and augmented his essays and in 1625 he published the augmented edition, of which the present is a copy, having been re-printed from the same types in 1632. In a letter to the French Ambassador which he sent with a copy of this edition he writes:- “Cest un Recompilement de mes Essayes morales et civiles; mais tellement enlargies et enrichies, taut de nombre que de poid, que c’est de fait un ocuvre nouveau.” Bacon died in 1626.
