Incline Press, Oldham. 2003. 40pp., one of 250 signed an numbered copies, illustrated throughout with title-pages and woodcuts, there is a packet of full-size facsimiles fixed in the back of the book, printed on a paper especially hand-made for the purpose at Griffin Mill, orig. quarter holland, blue paper boards. Based on the illustrated talk that the author has given to the Manchester Bibliographical Society. Barry McKay begins with an amusing introduction, in which he focuses on the role of chapbooks in disseminating a common culture through cheap literature. He follows that with a series of case studies, concentrating on a cluster of printing publishers in the far north-west of England.
