KNITTING TEACHER’S ASSISTANT.  The Knitting Teacher’s Assistant: Designed for the use of National Girls’ Schools.
Printed for J. Hatchard and Son. 1819. A New Edition, improved, 12mo, 44,[4]pp., without the half-title, the final 2 leaves consists of a ‘Scale of stockings and socks’ and an advert leaf for Books published by Hatchard & Son, orig. printed wrappers, reinforced on the inside by bits of a letterpress poster from the mid-19th century, hole to blank margin of title, although the wrappers are a little grubby they are still quite legible, two consecutive pages have a single closed tear, which has been repaired, stitched as issued. “The chief object of this Assistant is to enable Teachers of Classes properly to explain the art of Knitting; for, however simple the art may seem, it has often been observed that little Teachers have a difficulty in expressing the meaning of their instructions to the Pupils. The Questions and Answers here furnished, combined with exemplification in practice, will, it is hoped, tend to remove this difficulty. They have proved extremely useful in Worthing Girls’ School, and are now published with a view of benefiting other Schools where knitting is practised.”—Advertisement. A rare little knitting manual, the earliest edition listed on Copac is a 7th edition dated 1836; OCLC records a single copy of this edition, located at the University of Melbourne.
