First Edition, xiv,502,[4]pp., wood-engraved frontispiece purporting to be Gutenberg, but in reality is a portrait of Koster copied from Moxon, text printed within ornamental typographical border, ornamental wood engraved headpieces and initials, illustrations, specimens of printing types, recent calf calf with marbled sides, morocco label lettered in gilt, a few unobtrusive library stamps otherwise a nice clean copy. ‘The authors named as those from whom the historical matter was compiled, are Moxon, Ames, Middleton, Atkyns, Watson, Palmer &c. &c. ; the principal instructions are “the united opinions of the most experienced of the trade.” The latter is indeed the best part of the work. Following p.132 is “a specimen of printing types by W. Caslon & Son, letter-founders in London,” without date. There are 23 pages of flowers including a number of fantastic and elegant designs made out of them; and 41 pages of type-specimens, including music type and foreign alphabets.’—Bigmore & Wyman.
