BEIT-ARIÉ (MALACHI) EDITOR.  Worms Mahzor. MS. Jewish National and University Library Heb. 4°781/1.
Published by Cyelar Establishment, Vadez, Co-Publisher The Jewish National and University Library, Jerusalem. 1985. Large folio, complete facsimile in original size, one of 300 numbered copies, consisting of 3 volumes enclosed in the original hessian covered custom-made box, the facsimile volume is a facsimile of the Worms Mahzor (Hebrew MS. copied in 1272) consisting of 225 pages of simulated vellum designed to imitate the thickness of the original, bound in full light brown calfskin with decorative blind-tooling to simulate the original binding, with brass clasps, centre and corner pieces, volume 2 is represented here by facsimiles of 2 illuminated pages: fol. 73r (Gates of Mercy) and fol. 119v (Rose of the Valley), each printed on one of the 2 loose leaves in a portfolio, the commentary volume of 200 pages and 32 illustrations is in English and Hebrew, portfolio and commentary volume in matching calfskin, a fine copy. The Mahzor of Worms is among the oldest known prayer books written for the Ashkenazic rite and an excellent testimony to Jewish book illumination in the Middle Ages. A mahzor (Hebrew for cycle) contains the prayers ever recurring at high festivals and thus constitutes a collection of festival prayers for liturgical use. The Mahzor of Worms was produced in 1272 on the Rhine and used by the cantors of Worms for more than 650 years as their “official” festival prayer book. Gloriously illustrated mahzorim, especially in the Ashkenazic tradition, have come down to the present from the 13th century and the Mahzor of Worms is an impressive example. While the early manuscripts of this type were only sparsely illustrated, the Mahzor of Worms develops a very special decoration pattern. Virtually all festivals are illustrated to accompany the relevant text. These illuminated scenes reflect the life of the Ashkenazic community of this period and their world of thought. The Mahzor of the Jewish community of Worms comprises two volumes and the first volume of this Jewish prayer book is presented in a facsimile edition (MS 4°781/1 in the Jewish National and University Library Jerusalem). The facsimile further contains the faithfully reproduced illuminated pages (2 leaves) of the second volume. The comprehensive scholarly commentary is written both in English and Hebrew and contains articles by prominent international experts on Jewish Studies, codicology, the history of Jewish art and book restoration. Published price $6,950.00. Now out of print.
