[COWIE (GEORGE)]  Cowie’s Bookbinder’s Manual: Containing a Full Description of Leather and Vellum Binding; Directions for Gilding of Paper and Book-Edges and Numerous Valuable Recipes for Sprinkling, Colouring, & Marbling; Together with a Scale of Bookbinders' Charges
William Strange. [1853?]. Seventh Edition, viii,9-141,[3]pp., orig. embossed cloth, re-cased, title in gilt on upper cover, enclosed in a cloth covered clam-shell box. This manual is usually attributed to the printer George Cowie who printed it, but was no doubt written by a practising bookbinder. The first edition was published in 1828 and the text remained unaltered until this seventh edition. “In presenting to the public this new edition of the ‘Bookbinder’s Manual,’ the proprietor begs to state, that the whole has been carefully examined, extended, improved, and carried through the press, by an experienced and practical binder, whose constant occupation, for a series of years, in all the branches here described, has, perhaps, rendered him the most competent person define, in a systematic and perspicuous manner, the various matters connected with his calling” - preface. All editions of this early bookbinding manual are extremely scarce. Pollard & Potter 98.

EIGHTEENTH CENTURY BINDING ACCOUNTS.  A bound folio volume of manuscript binding accounts for various years between 1765 and 1781. 35 manuscript leaves consisting of commissions for books to be bound, statements of accounts by the binder Chamot, and receipts for work undertaken signed by Cham
The volume begins with a number of statements of accounts rendered by the binder Chamot. These statements list the title of each work he has bound along with a brief note of its decoration and of course the price. Also included are Chamot’s receipts for monies paid. For 1779 there is a 14 page list of books in wrappers which are to be bound by Chamot. Here, in a left hand column, Chamot has indicated his choice of binding which in many cases has been altered by Sénac who has also added a few interesting observations. At the end there is a letter from Sénac to Chamot in which he expresses his exasperation at the long delay in receiving his books. On the verso of the letter Chamot has somewhat tartly replied that Sénac still owes him money! The books listed in these highly interesting documents cover a wide variety of subjects — history, antiquities, law, travel, economics, science and manuscripts many of which no doubt belonged to Jean-Baptiste Sénac. These documents were collected by the historian Amans-Alexis Monteil (1789-1860), one of the first to be interested in domestic history. He had them bound in 1842 in an 18th century style binding of green morocco title in gilt on upper cover “Comptes de Reliures. Année 1779. Man[uscrit] App[artenant] à Mr. Monteil”. This elegant binding was then presented to his friend Jean-Antoine Letronne (1787-1848), director of the ‘Ecole des Chartes’ and Keeper of the Royal Archives. Monteil has prefaced the collection with a 4 page manuscript introduction. A fascinating and rare insight into customer-binder relationships of the 18th century. Provenance: Monsieur de Sénac; Amans-Alexis Monteil; Jean-Antoine Letronne; Baron Pichon (pencil note in Gruel’s hand, bought at the Pichon sale 1887); Léon Gruel; Pierre Berès.
