Gilt titles and decorations to the spines. Top edge gilt. The leather is a little rubbed to the edges and corners. This is an ex-library set, with library number to the base of each spine. Inside, there are library stamps, including a modern barcode sticker to the inside front board of each volume. There are also electronic security stickers to the volumes. Vol. 1. Complete, Vol. 2. Complete, Vol. 3 missing 2 plates of Indian Costume. Vol. 4. Complete, Vol. 5. One double plate loose but still half attached. Complete. Vol. 6. Complete. It looks as if Vol. 6 has been restored at some point, as there are white rather than marbelled end papers, and the spine shows signs of slight repair. 498 of 500 plates. Approx 300 in vivid chromolithography printed by Didot, and 200 in camaieu (monochrome). The illustrations cover not only historical clothing, but also military uniforms, Religious attire, tools and furniture, and objects that people use in daily life.
