First Edition. Original boards. A nice copy of this early dictionary. Original boards and cloth spine. Both are significantly rubbed, with the corners particularly rubbed to the boards. Label is chipped to the spine. There is a library label to the base of the spine. Although an ex-library copy, there are minimal marks to it. Some light damp staining to the initial pages, and a little foxing throughout. Pagination is in arabic. The Arabic is in the Egyptian dialect. Faris al-Shidyaq (1804-87) was a Lebanese writer, linguist and journalist who played an important role in the Arabic literary revival of the 19th century. Maronite (Syriac Catholic) by birth, he converted to Protestantism and then to Islam. He is considered to be one of the founding fathers of modern Arabic Literature. ; 8vo 7 ¾" - 9 ¾" tall.
