Although Sir William McKell was not the first Australian-born Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia he is the first to achieve that high office from truly humble beginnings. But this book is much less about the dignity and distinction he brought to that position then about the hurly-burly of political life in N.S.W. from the First World War, when young William entered Parliament, until after the end of the Second World War, during which, it has often been claimed he was the most dynamic and successful Premier any State of the Commonwealth has enjoyed. The foundation of the Mercantile Mutual coincided in dramatic circumstance with the selection of the first Australian Test cricket team to visit England. Many critics claimed that this team was not representative. To settle the argument, a match was arranged between Australian Eleven and fifteen New South Wales players. This match was played on the Sydney Cricket Ground, 23rd to 25th November, 1877, and resulted in a win for the Australian Eleven by four wickets. Among the spectators was George Hardie, a real estate agent. Before going to see the cricket match, he had discussed with George Allan Mansfield, architect, and A. H. McCulloch, a solicitor, who suggested the formation of a new insurance company. The suggestion caught Hardie's imagination. At the Cricket Ground he mentioned it to many of his friends, and the idea was so favorably received that, before the game ended, Hardie had received promises of a large portion of capital required. A preliminary meeting of prospective shareholders was held before Christmas 1877. Hardie, Mansfield and McCulloch had given shape to their idea by drafting a prospectus for a company with a capital of 100,000 pounds. The word had gone around and soon the promoters had received applications for the whole of the capital. The company was incorporated in January 1878 and a Board of Directors elected. The quality of these men was the best guarantee of the company's success. Very Good/Fine/Very Good/Fine.
