 - ROWSE, DR. A.L. AND HEDGECOE, JOHN  In Shakespeare's Land: A Journey Through the Landscape of Elizabethan England
London, Book Club Associates By Arrangement with Weidenfield and Nicolson. 1986. Hard Cover, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Publishers original green boards with gilt lettering to spine. Dustwrapper: unclipped, now protected in Brodart. White endpapers, no inscriptions. 200pp including index, profusely illustrated with magnificent full colour and b/w photographs, plates and line illustrations throughout text. Pages clean and bright in a firm binding. A love of England, its people, history and institutions is strongly evident in Shakespeare's writing. The most autobiographical of all the Elizabethan dramatists, his background permeates his plays for descriptions of the world he knew, its people, buildings and countryside, occur frequently. Potent reminders of his world have survived to this day, the pastures and woodland of his native Warwickshire, the half-timbered houses and inns of old towns, the bustling streets and elegant palaces of the cities, castle, mansions and parkland, have not all been lost. The authors portray this sometimes idyllic, sometimes dramatic world to perfection. They visit Shakespeare's birthplace, they record the landscape and villages that provided him with constant inspiration; they trace him in the south-east of England at Windsor and Eton, Datchet and Mead, Rochester and Dover; and finally follow him from Stratford to London, showing all that is left of the city he knew. Complemented by contemporary prints and maps. A gazetteer provides routes and information for visitors, ensuring that this is the definitive survey of Shakespeare's England. Very Good/Very Good.
