 - NICHOLS, RICHARD  Muscle Cars
London, Bison Books. 1989, Reprint. Hard Cover, 4t. Publishers red cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Dustwrapper: unclipped, now protected in Brodart. Red endpapers, no inscriptions. 112pp including index, profusely illustrated with colour photographs throughout text, pages clean and bright in firm binding. Nostalgic fondness for the sixties began virtually as soon as they ended; it was a special time, a period of great changes, enormous excitement and almost euphoric confidence. It's a feeling reflected by the music, the movies and the literature of the era, and by the automobiles. The sixties saw the advent of muscle mania. Here was a technique, which involved the installation of ever larger and more powerful engines into a variety of different vehicles. Some, like Shelby's Cobra and Mitchell's Sting Ray, were built for the job. Others, and it's a much longer list, were simply dress up family sedans, pressed into service for which they definitely had not been intended. The result was an unequalled mixture of cars whose sheer brute power has subsequently earned them a place in legend, and the tire-smoking monsters of the period became the subject of virtual adulation, glorified in the pop music of the time, and later were the stars of the cult movies of the seventies. Here those cars are collected and evaluated together; rather than a collection of road tests and specification sheets, this is the story of the creation, evolution and eventual decline of the muscle car phenomenon. Very Good/Very Good.
