With one engraved frontispiece (or decorated extra title) and 16 engraved plates, all cut to the plate and mounted as leporellos on two folded paper strokes. Some staining. Last leaf with marginal paperflaw without any loss of text. Old signature on title. 19th century half vellum. First illustrated edition of an early work on stenography, mainly devoted to the Spanish phonetics. The author, a member of the Economical Society of Madrid and of the Academy of San Fernando, here recommends a syllabic system of transcription, wheras the systems previously elaborated were literal. In the introduction he discusses in detail the stenographic methods elaborated in England and France and their drawbacks concerning the application to the Spanish language. (xvi), 163, (4). With engraved vignette on title, 3 engraved head- and tail pieces and 20 engraved plates (of which 7 with alphabets and 13 with coins). Contemporary vellum, with title in manuscript on spine. Recased with new end papers. Old (beautiful) annotations in margins. Velazquez de Velasco (1722-1772), marquis of Valdeflores, was a renowned historian of his time. In this work Velazquez compares the characters - on coins and inscriptions - with alphabets of the people who had been in contact with Spain. He recognizes the existence of three different alphabets; Celtiberian, Tudetan and Bastulo-Phoenician. First edition. Brunet v, 1116.
