Library stamps on front paste down. A German version of a collection of articles taken from the "El Mercurio Peruano", a newspaper which appeared twice a week from January 1791 - April 1794 in Lima. The articles deal with natural history, minearology, commerce, geography, topography, etc and travels of the missionaries (Franciscans) in the mountainous regions of Peru. Volume one contains a German translation of Joseph Skinner's "The Present State of Peru...", London 1805, translated by Ch. Weyland and published by F.I. Bertruch. Volume two contains a translation of the last 6 volumes of the "Mercurio Peruano", which was never translated into English. Here translated from the original Spanish by E.A. Contemporary full calf, nicely rebacked preserving the original spine. Spine with five raised bands, richly decorated and with title label. Old ownership signature on title page. A popular account which was first published in 1698 and reissued many times. The voyage was led by Captain De Gennes and sailed from La Rochelle in 1695. This account is written by Froger who joined the voyage as a volunteer engineer. Includes accurate observations about the trade between Africa and the Antilles, details about the European colonies around the Atlantic and important information on the natural history of the countries visited. With both half titles, two engraved frontispieces and one folding engraved map. Contemporary half calf with flat spine richly decorated in compartments and with red title label, on marbled boards. Binding lightly rubbed and top of spine slightly worn, but overall a very attractive copy. Bookplate (A.L. Hegardt). The author Gosselman (1799-1843) was a Commander in the Swedish Royal Navy and made several trips to the Americas, and spent a couple of years in Colombia during 1825-26. This vivid narrative includes interesting information about the culture, agriculture and geography of Colombia. His account became very popular and was reprinted many times. Palau 706354.
