| LEONOWENS, ANNA HARRIETTE: The English Governess at the Siamese Court: Being Recollections of Six Years in the Royal Palace at Bangkok. Philadelphia, Porter & Coates, (1870). Pp. xi, 321. With 8 wood engraved plates made from photographs given to the author by the King of Siam. Publisher's decorated cloth, printed in gilt and black, extremities lightly rubbed. A wellknown account by an English governess about her life with the Royal family of Bangkok. King Mongkut of Siam (or Rama IV), a well educated and fashionable man, wanted to give his children an European education. Anna Leonowens spent six years at the court where she taught 67 Royal children and also some wives and slaves. The accuracy of her work has been questioned but apart from that it's a charming story which Margaret Landon used for her novel "Anna and the King of Siam" (1944) and it was followed by a musical and a film "The King and I".
