The main purpose of the expedition was to introduce the breadfruit plant from the South Sea islands to the West Indies. Le Brigant, an erudite from Pontieux in Brittany, considered that the Gaelic language was the mother of all languages which he tried to prove a.o. in this work. Deals with the Caribbean language on pp 62 to 68 and the Tahitian language on pp 69 to 77. The Tahitian words were taken from the vocabularies of Bougainville and Forster. A charming copy with beautiful contemporary annotations throughout the text and added by the same hand: "Notes & Extraits qui ont rapport à la Langue Celtique" (title page + 19 pages of text) and an additional 46 pages manuscript with a.o. "Vie de Ruth en langue breton" (20 pages and a large table).

Contemporary calf, spine gilt with 5 raised bands and title-label. Spine ends slightly worn. Second edition, reissued from the first (Paris 1700), of this interesting account of the Mariana (or Ladrone) islands in the West Pacific and the Jesuit mission established there by Diego Luis de Sanvitores. Father Le Gobien, a Jesuit priest (and editor to "Lettres edifiantes"), never visited the Mariana islands but based his account chiefly on the relations and letters of missionaries sent to him from Rome, Spain, the Netherlands etc. Includes a letter by P. KEATE, GEORGE:  An Account of the Pelew Islands, Situated in the Western Part of the Pacific Ocean Composed from the Journals and Communications of Captain Henry Wilson and some of his Officers who in August 1783 were there Shipwrecked in the Antelope, a Packet Belonging to the Honourable East India Company. London, Printed for Captain Wilson, 1789.
4to. Pp. xxxvi, (1), 378. With one large folding engraved map, one engraved front portrait and 15 engraved plates. Nicely rebound with new paper spine, original covers preserved. Some light offsetting to the plates (as usual) otherwise a clean and nice copy. Third edition of this classic account by Keate first published in 1788. The Antelope was shipwrecked on the Pelew Islands or Palau, in the Caroline Islands of the west Pacific. All the crew were saved and were the first Europeans to make contact with these islanders. This popular account describes the natives, their life and customs including religious practices and language. Here included is the first printed vocabulary of the Pelew language, which belongs to the Austronesian family of languages. The plates depict ornaments and jewellery, baskets, belts, swords etc. Wilson brought back some artifacts which generated a great interest in Europe of the South Seas. Cox ii, p. 302. Original green cloth, printed in gilt, top edge gilt otherwise uncut. Very slightly shaken. Some offsetting to endpapers, otherwise an unsusual fine copy. First edition of a comprehensive work on the Easter Island including information of its cultural and ethnographical problems. Mrs. Routledge and her husband undertook several anthropological expeditions, which they financed themselves. Contains many photographs of the island's statues, probably the earliest photograhic survey undertaken. Also includes a lot of information about the places encountered along the routes, to and from the Island; Madeira, the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, the Magellan Strait to the pacific Ocean, Tahiti, Hawaiian Islands, San Francisco, The Panama, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Bermuda, etc. Robinson p. 148.
