| FREEMAN, JOHN JOSEPH & JOHNS, D.: A Dictionary of the Malagasy Language. Two parts in one volume. An-Tananarivo, Printed at the Press of the London Missionary Society, By R. Kitching, 1835. Pp. (iv), 421 + (viii), 308. With one folding table. Contemporary half black calf, flat spine decorated in gilt, somewhat rubbed, expertly rebacked with original spine preserved. Binding by W. Ring, Port Elisabeth. Blindstamp of Leonard G. Dawson on title. First edition of this early imprint from Madagascar. Comprises: I. English - Malagasy dictionary by Freeman and II. Nu Faharoa'ny, Malagasy sy English by Johns including an appendix pp. 285-308. In 1820 London Missionary Society started missionary work in Madagascar and in 1826 a printing press was sent to Antananarivo. However the early missionary success was countered by a period of repressions and religious intolerance. During the reign of Queen Ranalalona I (1835-61) the Christians were bitterly persecuted and a royal edict was issued in March 1835 making the possession of Christian books punishable by death. In 1862 the mission was re-established in Madagascar. Freeman (1794-1851) was the Home Secretary of the London Missionary Society 1846-51. A handsome copy.
