| AKERBLAD (ÅKERBLAD), JOHAN DAVID: Lettre sur une inscription phénicienne trouvée à Athènes. Rome, Bourlié, 1817. 4to. Pp. 24. With one engraved plate. Contemporary marbled boards, cloth spine, corners lightly rubbed, spine faded. Private stamp on title. Johan Åkerblad (1763-1819) was a Swedish diplomat and orientalist, and a student of Silvestre de Sacy. He is probably most famous for his contribution to the decipherment of the hieroglyphic script on the Rosetta Stone. During his last years in Rome he was mainly devoted to the studies of Greek epigraphy. Due to limited economical means he published only four small works in Rome; interpretations of difficult inscriptions, of which this is one of them. This work, dedicated to his friend Andreas Italinsky, deals with the interpretation of a tombstone with Greek and Phoenician scripts. Includes also a Hebrew transcription. | BELLERMANN, FRIEDRICH: Die Hymnen des Dionysius und Mesomedes. Text und Melodieen nach Handschriften und den alten Ausgaben. Berlin, Albert Förstner, 1840. 4to. Pp. (viii), 84. With 4 plates (with old annotations). Contemporary cloth, worn. With stamps. Partly foxed. This work devoted to ancient Greek music is mainly based on three studies; 1. by Vincentio Galilei, Firenze 1581; 2. Johann Fell, Oxford 1672 and; 3. Jean Pierre Burette, Paris first half of 18th century. Prior to the discovery of the Seikilos epitaph in the late 19th century, the hymns of Mesomedes were the only surviving written music from the ancient time. | CASAUBON, ISAAC: De satyrica graecorum poesi et romanorum satira libri duo. Paris, A. & H. Drouart, 1605. Pp. (xvi), 356, (2), one blank leaf + 'cyclops' pp. 38, one blank leaf. With one engraving in the text and a few woodcut ornaments. Contemporary calf, worn and hinges cracked, spine chipped. "With this publication Casaubonus created the first modern specialized monograph on a classic literary genre, the satire, which remained the standard work on the subject for two centuries. Casaubonus is usually credited with having dissociated, on etymological grounds, Roman "satura" from Greek "satyr-plays" and thus laid the foundation of modern understanding of classic satire". See De Smet, Menippean satire, 39. Included in the work is the Latin version of Euripides' 'Cyclops' as translated by Florens Christianus with a few notes to the Greek text, included for its satirical contents. This work is also of Arabic interest. On page 90 a few words are printed with the famous Le Bé types, cut in 1599, but sparingly used in France since. See also item 137 La Brosse.
