With one engraved portrait frontispiece, by Houbraken after Quinckhard, and 111 engraved plates of plants. Title-page printed in red and black and with engraved vignette. Old annotations on title-page. Nicely rebound (by Bernard Middleton) in modern vellum, spine lettered in gilt. First edition of the first illustrated flora of Ceylon. The work was published shortly before Burman was appointed professor of botany at Amsterdam. Carl von Linné, a friend of Burman, assisted in the preparation of the work and later on published his own "Flora Zeylanica" (1747). The appendix contains a catalogue of African plants. | CHATER, JAMES: A Grammar of the Cingalese Language. Colombo, printed at the Government Press by Nicholas Bergman, 1815. Pp. (x), 141. Printed on good quality paper, with wide margins. Uncut, unopened copy in original boards, spine detached. Housed in special made cloth box by Bernard Middleton. Copy of John Lawson. First edition of the first grammar of the Cingalese language to have been compiled by an Englishman and printed in the island. The British took over the rule of Ceylon from the Dutch in 1796. A few years later the government set up a printing press. The earliest known publications printed by the British are printed at Colombo in 1813. Nicholas Bergman became the Head Printer of the Government Press in 1815 and remained in this post until at least 1930. See Rhodes: "The Spread of Printing. Fredereka or 'Eka' Gordon Cumming was the 12th child of a wealthy Scottish family. She travelled most of her life, became a "globe-trotter", and wrote many books and articles. 'Eka' was a talented artist and over the years amassed a collection of a thousand paintings from different parts of the world. Second edition, first was published in 1840. In 1836 the author set out from India and crossed into Afghanistan, south of the Khyber Pass, and made his way to Ghunzi and thence to Kabul before returning to Peshawar.
