| BARTH, HEINRICH: Travels and Discoveries in North and Central Africa: Being a journal of an expedition undertaken under the auspices of H.B.M.'s Government, in the years 1849-1855. Five volumes. London, Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, & Roberts, 1857. Pp. xxxvi, 578, adv. 26; xii, 676; xii, 635; xiv, 641, adv. 26; xii, 694, (2). With 15 folding maps, 60 chromolithographed plates protected with tissue guards and numerous illustrations in the text. Small library stamp on verso of title pages and in a few more places. Modern half calf on green cloth, spines with five raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt. Spines slightly faded. First English edition, published simultaneously with the German (Gotha 1857-8), of one of the most important works on African exploration. In 1850 Barth, German geographer and historian, joined the British expedition headed by James Richardson setting out from Tripoli across Sahara. The main goal for the expedition was to explore Lahe Chad in sub-Saharan Central Africa. Richardson died not far from their goal Lake Chad and Barth was then designated as leader of the expedition. Barth was different from other explorers because he was interested in the history and culture of the Africans peoples and he scrupulosly studied the topography, history, languages, resources of the countries he visited. This narrative contains a detailed record of his travels and of the countries and tribes along the route with a special interest in regional economics and the impact of slave trade. First edition of this famous account of the gorilla. Paul Du Chaillu (1835-1903) spent four years on this, his first expedition into Central Africa.
