Folio. With dedication title with engraved medallion portrait of king Gustavus iii of Sweden and 24 lvs of text, of which 23 with 46 specimens of different alphabets. Printed on one side only within an ornamental woodcut border. Nice half red morocco, spine lettered in gilt, with Fredrik von Steijern's arms in gilt on front cover. Printed on good quality paper at the press of the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide in Rome which at the time had fonts for 44 different languages. A scarce work of a type specimen printed in the form of a congratulatory poem by Gudmund Göran Adelberth to the Swedish King Gustav iiion the occasion of his visit to he Rome in 1784. Pp. xii, 388. With 26 tinted lithographed plates, several finished in colour by hand, 2 maps (of which one folding) and one facsimile receipt in Japanese tipped in. Original crimmon cloth, gilt, with some fading and marks. Internally crisp and clean. First edition. A narrative based on two voyages in the 1870's visiting India, Ceylon, Singapore, Indonesia, China, Hong Kong, Japan and North America by an amateur botanist. The plates are made after the author's drawings and depict plants, fruits, views and natives along the route. This work contains several references to coffee cultivation. Uncut copy in contemporary boards, worn. A beautiful type specimen work of biblical languages. Besides illustrating different alphabets it gives reading exercises and some translations of biblical texts. Marcel (1776-1854), orientalist and pupil of Silvestre de Sacy, was commissioned by Napoleon to manage the printing press in Cairo and after his return to France he was placed in charge of the l'Imprimerie Impériale. In 1805 Marcel superintended the production of an "Oratio Dominica" including numerous exoctic types cut by himself. Thonnelier 1091.
