Exhibition catalogue of male nude photographs, mostly from Italy, in the "physique" style by Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden, Vincenzo Galdi, Gugliemo von Pluschow, Nino Longobardi, Herb Ritts, Robert Mapplethorpe and Bruce Weber. An important part of gay history. Text by Jonathan Turner. Already a collectors item. Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden (September 16, 1856-February 16, 1931) was a German photographer who worked mainly in Italy. He is mostly known for his pastoral nude studies of Sicilian boys, which usually featured props such as wreaths or amphoras suggesting a setting in the Greece or Italy of antiquity. From a modern standpoint, his work is commendable due to his controlled use of lighting as well as the often elegant poses of his models. Innovative use of photographic filters and special body makeup contribute to the artistic perfection of his works. Famous in his own day, his work was subsequently eclipsed for close to a century, only to re-emerge in recent times as "the most important gay visual artist of the pre-World War I era" according to Thomas Waugh. | JARMAN, DEREK Evil Queen: The Last Paintings London, Salmon (Richard) Ltd. 1994, First Edition. (ISBN: 0952435608) Paperback, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Jarman was born in Northwood, Middlesex, boarded at Canford School in Dorset and from 1960 studied at King's College London. This was followed by four years at the Slade School of Art, starting in 1963. He had a studio at Butler's Wharf, London, and was part of the Andrew Logan social scene in the 1970s. On December 22, 1986 he was diagnosed HIV positive, and was notable for later discussing his condition in public. His illness prompted him to move to Prospect Cottage, Dungeness, near to the nuclear power station. In 1994 he died of an AIDS related illness. Chumbawamba subsequently released Song for Derek Jarman in his honour. These paintings were exhibited at the Whitworth Gallery, University of Manchester. New.
