CASEMENT, ROGER (PETER SINGLETON-GATES AND MAURICE GIRODIAS, EDITORS)  The Black Diaries. An Account of Roger Casement's Life and Times, with a Collection of His Diaries and Public Writings
London: Sidgwick and Jackson, 1959. AN EXCEPTIONAL COPY, WITH TWO UNIQUE AND IMPORTANT LETTERS CITED IN THE STANDARD OLYMPIA PRESS BIBLIOGRAPHY. 0ne of 2,000 copies of the first British edition. (Actually this "British edition" was created by taking 2,000 copies of the first American (Grove Press) edition to England, putting a sticker over the imprint, and issuing a new dustjacket.) LAID IN ARE TWO EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TYPED LETTERS SIGNED--ABOUT 1,000 WORDS--FROM THE EDITOR, SINGLETON-GATES, on his letterhead, to a correspondent in Nothern Rhodesia (later Zambia) (!). In these unpublished letters, written during the 1960s, Singleton-Gates describes his feelings towards Casement. He also describes, in passionate terms, the fascinating circumstances surrounding the publication of these scandalous diaries, and the numerous obstacles he faced, including copyright and censorship issues. He furthermore explains his various other projects relating to Casement, none of which came to fruition. It is fair to say that these letters shed considerable light on the limits of press freedoms in Britain during the late 50s and 60s, as well as on the way Casement's heirs felt about his legacy. THESE LETTERS ARE CITED--and briefly excerpted--on pp. 60-61 of Patrick Kearney's bibliography, The Paris Olympia Press (Liverpool, Liverpool University Press, 2007). Also laid in are numerous newspaper clippings from 1959 and 1960, all relating to the publication. 4to. Publisher's cloth. Fine and bright, in a very good price-clipped dj.

COLE, WILLIAM (MASAFUMI YAMAMOTO)  Hai-Ku. With two original engravings by Masafumi Yamamoto (haiku)
Sitges: Cole & Contreras, 2005. In 1980, shortly after taking up printmaking, Masafumi Yamamoto produced two absolutely astonishing erotic engravings of female nudes, still the only erotic works in his entire oeuvre. They are incredibly detailed and precise--yet extremely imaginative--burin engravings printed in relief (photos avalable on request). In 1981 he printed the editions and signed, dated, and justified the prints. Soon afterwards, Yamamoto adopted his well-known style of color intaglio printmaking. Since the erotic prints were so different, he abandoned them in a drawer of his flatfile for over two decades. Finally, in early 2005, the prints were published, each alongside erotic an erotic hai-ku by Cole, the publisher. EDITION LIMITED TO ONLY NINETEEN NUMBERED COPIES printed on thick, handmade wove paper WITH THE TWO SIGNED EROTIC PRINTS. Furthermore, there are three ornaments (including one on the cover), all of which are original etchings by Yamamoto. Large 4to. Loose as issued in original wraps. FINE AND BRIGHT. New.

CORDAY, MICHEL (MARCEL GOMPEL ASSOCIATION COPY)  Les revelees. Roman.
Paris: Bibliotheque Charpentier / Eugene Fasquelle, 1909. FIRST EDITION of this novel which, way ahead of its time, discusses the right of women to enjoy sexual pleasure. A LARGE-PAPER COPY, ONE OF ONLY TEN PRINTED ON FINE HANDMADE DUTCH LAID PAPER (the rest of the edition was printed on cheap wood-pulppaper.) Also a fascinating association copy, from the library of MARCEL GOMPEL, a Jewish professor at the College de France who became a hero of the French resistance and was finally tortured and executed on orders from Klaus Barbie. When Barbie came to trial, the prosecutors used Gompel's case as a particularly clear and egregious example of his guilt of crimes against humanity. 8vo. Beautifully bound (surely for Gompel) in half morocco and marbled boards. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Original covers and spine preserved. Silk ribbon page marker. FINE AND BRIGHT, with no defects. A truly unique book.

RONSARD, PIERRE DE AND ARISTIDE MAILLOL (AMBROISE VOLLARD)  Livret de folastries (with etchings by Aristide Maillol)
Paris: Ambroise Vollard, 1938. Illustrated with 43 original etchings (16 full-page and hors-texte) by Aristide Maillol, many of which are quite erotic. From a total edition of 230 copies, this is ONE OF 35 ON JAPAN PAPER. Only the copies on Japan are signed with Maillol's monogram, as this copy is. (Note: the individual etchings are not signed in this or in any other known copy. I once saw a copy with poorly forged penciled monograms on each of the hors-texte etchings, though.) This copy furthermore contains another etching by Maillol, "Feuille d'etudes" (Guerin 379), never published and extremely rare (this particular etching is illustrated in a full-page plate in Vollard's autobiography). Although Maillol illustrated several books with lithographs and woodcuts, this is the only one he did with etchings and, in fact, it contains almost the entirety of his work in this medium. One of Vollard's last great books: the great publisher died before the book was completed. According to Strachan, one of Vollard's "finest masterpieces." (p. 36) Small quarto, loose in original wraps as issued. Fine. References: Skira 217 (illustrated), Erving 17 (illus.), Guerin 332-374, Johnson 190 (illus.), Rauch 143, Wheeler p. 106 (illus.), Vollard p. 68 (illus.), Jentsch 33 (illus.), Strachan 337, Carteret IV, p. 347: "La seule et belle illustration de l'artiste gravee a l'eau-forte; elle est tres recherchee et cotee, surtout sur japon." One of the great erotic illustrated books of the 20th century.

HIRSCH, JOSEPH (SYLVAN COLE ASSOCIATION COPY)  Couples (includes "Couple and One", "Nereid and Poseidon", "Wakening", "Hammock", "Hands at Rest", and "Centaur")
New York: Associated American Artists, 1969-1970. A COMPLETE DELUXE SET, IN FINE CONDITION. This is a charming suite of six color lithographs (Cole 61-66), many playfully erotic, each justified and signed in pencil by Hirsch. From a total edition of 145 suites, all printed on fine BFK Rives paper, this is ONE OF FIVE HORS-COMMERCE SETS WITH AN ADDITIONAL SET OF THE LITHOGRAPHS PRINTED IN BLACK, ALSO JUSTIFIED AND SIGNED IN PENCIL BY HIRSCH. Additionally signed by Hirsch on the limitation page. This is furthermore an outstanding association copy, WITH A SIGNED PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION FROM HIRSCH TO "LILYAN AND SYLVAN". Sylvan Cole (1918-2005) was the most important dealer in American prints of his (or any) generation, and as the director of Associated American Artists published thousands of prints, including this suite. He also compiled several catalogues raisonnes, including the one of Hirsch's prints. "Lilyan" was Cole's second wife. Since each of the prints is signed, virtually all copies of this suite have been brokenup. This copy is complete because it remained in Cole's private collection from the time Hirsch presented it to him until Cole died. Large folio. FINE AND BRIGHT WITH NO DEFECTS. In the original (very slightly worn) cloth folding case. A unique, important, and impressive item. IMPORTANT NOTE: During March, 2006, hundreds of prints represented as being from "the Sylvan Cole collection" were sold at public auction. In fact, ALL of these items were from his leftover gallery inventory, not his private collection. As far as I know, the few items I offer from Sylvan's collection are the ONLY items anywhere on the market which are actually from his private collection (which he kept in his apartment, not his gallery). I acquired them all directly from Sylvan (my uncle), mainly in spring, 2005.

MATHEY, GEORG ALEXANDER (HANS BETHGE)  Sechs Radierungen zu Hans Bethge's Satuila (original etchings by Georg Alexander Mathey)
Berlin: Morawe & Scheffelt, 1921. NUMBER ONE OF ONLY TEN SETS OF THIS OUTSTANDING PORTFOLIO OF EXPRESSIONIST ETCHINGS, WITH MANY OF THE ETCHINGS PRINTED ON OLD JAPANESE PAPER. In 1918 German novelist Hans Bethge wrote "Satuila oder vom Zauber der Suedsee" ("Satuila or the Enchantment of the South Sea"), the story of a young woman in Samoa. It is a sensual, escapist tale: the situation in Germany was quite terrible after the defeat in WWI, and there was great demand for escapism. This novel was a hit, and a deluxe edition, with 6 original etchings by German Expressionist artist Georg Alexander Mathey, was published in Berlin in 1921. The etchings are extremely beautiful, perfectly capturing the lush sensuality of the landscape and the unabashed sexuality of the characters (similar to the depictions of Gypsies by Otto Mueller, from about the same time). This edition of the novel was limited to 250 copies. Aside from the book edition, 10 sets of the etchings were printed, with large margins. In these 10 sets, each of the etchings is signed and numbered by the artist. I OFFER ONE OF THESE 10 SETS: SET NUMBER 1, with each of the etchings numbered 1/10 and signed in pencil by the artist. FOUR OF THE SIX ETCHINGS IN THIS SET ARE PRINTED ON OLD JAPANESE PAPER, AND ARE PERHAPS UNIQUE AS SUCH. Additionally, there is a signed working proof of an early version of one of the etchings, also printed on old Japanese paper. This proof is probably unique, as the etching was never published. The set is as it was issued. Each etching (sheet size 8 1/2 x 7 inches--22 x 18 cm) is individually matted, and the original parchment-backed cloth portfolio case (16 1/2 x 13 inches--42 x 33 cm). There is a little light wear to the portfolio, but the etchings are fine and bright. An important and extremely rare item (and perhaps the only German Expressionist depictions of the South Pacific!).
